Massimiliano Sassoli de Bianchi (president and administrator of Area 302) graduated in physics from the University of Lausanne (UNIL), Switzerland, in 1989. From 1990 to 1991, he served as an Assistant in the Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of Geneva (UNIGE). In 1992, he joined the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) as a Ph.D. candidate and received his Ph.D. in physics in 1995. Since 1996, he has worked in the private sector while pursuing research as an independent scholar. In 2016, he became a Research Fellow at the Center Leo Apostel for Interdisciplinary Studies (CLEA) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). From 2010 to 2026, he was also Director of the Laboratorio di Autoricerca di Base (LAB) in Lugano, Switzerland, and Editor of the journal AutoRicerca. His research focuses on the foundations of physics, quantum cognition, and consciousness studies. He has authored essays, popular science books, and children’s stories, and has published more than eighty research articles in international journals.
Luca Sassoli de Bianchi (member of the board of Area 302) is a professional designer and software developer, as well as a multifaceted artist. He trained in interactive media at the École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL), where he developed a sustained interest in visual, narrative, and interactive forms of expression across different media. After several years of experience as a programmer, he founded his own software design and development agency. He has also participated in academic research projects, contributing to the publication of scientific articles.
